Giant Robot is proud to host a "Choegal" release party attended by artist David Choe.

Raised on comic books, affected by street art, and inspired by crime, women, and music, Choe has developed a unique and restless style that is effortless yet meticulous and focused yet dirty. Since the artist contributed his first illustration to Giant Robot magazine in 1997, he has exhibited in solo shows around the world (at all three Giant Robot galleries as well as in Paris, Tokyo, and London) and also been featured on VBS-TV's popular Thumbs Up! series. Choegal is his first wood figure: extremely detailed, totally hand painted, and featuring a head that rotates to expose three facial expressions. This piece is strictly limited to 1,000 pieces.

From 4:00-7:00 on Saturday, January 3, 2009, Choe will be on hand to sign Choegal figures, as well as the brand new issue of Giant Robot. In addition to writing his regular column, he provided cover art and design elements found throughout the magazine.

Uglycon Costume Contest Winners!

Mon, 12/08/2008 - 19:48
Firstly, all of us at Giant Robot NY would like to thank every single person who braved the below-thirty-degree weather to come out for Uglycon. Everyone was such a pleasure, keeping on those smiles despite the lengthy waits & that rude fellow upstairs (I think we all know which one). We do appreciate it, and again THANK YOU for making Uglycon NY such a fun experience for us all!

There was plenty of head scratching & forehead wrinkling, but finally the top secret costume judges have given us the winners of the Uglycon costume contest! Now, without further adieu:

3rd Place
Autumn Noury as Wedgehead!

2nd Place
Jack Cardin as the Poe Car!

1st Place
Zoren Mastel as Ice-Bat!

Congratulations to all the winners! All of the costumes were so great and definitely put the icing on the cake that was Uglycon, so thank you ALL for dressing up! Everyone who dressed up will be receiving goodies in the maill; however, we're missing the addresses of Lois & Isabelle! If you are reading this, please e-mail us a photo of you in your costume, along with your address to grny@giantrobot.com!

Stay tuned for more Uglycon photos! Oh, and for those who weren't able to make it out on Saturday, we still have a few things available that will be available for sale on our website on Wednesday December 10th!

Giant Robot is proud to host the third annual Uglydoll convention at GRNY.

In 2001, Sun-Min Kim turned a drawing on the bottom of letters from David Horvath into a hand-sewn doll. It was Wage, the first Uglydoll ever. After David brought the piece to the newly opened Giant Robot store, it evolved into a toy with a rabid following - selling out at shops around the world, appearing in movies, creating spin-offs, spawning bootlegs, and inspiring a new wave of stuffed plushes.

This year's art show offerings will include original paintings by Sun-Min, black-and-white drawings by David, and print-and-drawing sets from Uglycon Tokyo. Also available for purchase will be rare toys such as test samples from past lines, signed prototypes, and "test shots" of kaiju figures.

In the tradition of the first two Uglycons, there will be costume contest in which fans are asked to dress up as their favorite Uglydoll. Winners chosen by David and Sun-Min will receive a bounty of prizes.

And there will be even more, including a sneak peek at a never-before-seen Uglydoll for 2009.

The first two Uglycons caused an online buzz and attracted fans from around the country and overseas. We expect the New York occasion to be even bigger. To facilitate demand and eliminate uncomfortable lineups, raffle tickets for making purchases will be handed out beginning at 12:00 noon. Starting at 3:00, these tickets will be drawn to determine the order of sales.

The opening reception will begin at 12:00 noon on Saturday, December 6.
